November 10, 2016 @ 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm

| £15.00
Black Chronicles | The Side Room | National Portrait Gallery | Events for Women in London

Due to our Curator no longer being able to attend, and despite contacting every organisation/person with knowledge of Black Victorian Britain, we’ve been unable to find a replacement at such short notice and have had to cancel this event – but we urge you to still go to see it before it ends on December 11th.

IF YOU HAVE ALREADY PURCHASED A TICKET PLEASE CHECK YOUR INBOX FOR AN EMAIL FROM US.

“There’s nothing like a photograph for reminding you about difference. There it is. It stares you ineradicably in the face” – Professor Stuart Hall, 2008.

We have the absolute pleasure to announce our next exhibition tour, Black Chronicles: Photographic Portraits 1862 – 1948 at the iconic National Portrait Gallery. The exhibition’s Curator, and Head of Archive at Autograph ABP Renée Mussai will lead the tour and provide an intimate insight into this beautiful collection.

Afterwards, join us at the National Portrait Gallery‘s late night pop-up bar for a drink (a glass of red or white wine or a soft drink is included in the ticket price), where we’ve reserved an area.

Meet, listen, learn, taste, explore.

Men are welcome as guests of women attending.

Ticket Price: £15.00

*Tickets are limited and can only be purchased online.

A bit about the exhibition: –

Black Chronicles showcases over forty photographs that present a unique snapshot of black lives and experiences in nineteenth and early twentieth-century Britain. This intervention in three gallery spaces includes some of the earliest photographs in the Gallery’s Collection alongside recently rediscovered photographs from the Hulton Archive, a division of Getty Images.

These portraits of individuals of African and Asian heritage bear witness to Britain’s imperial history of empire and expansion. They highlight an important and complex black presence in Britain before 1948, a watershed moment when the Empire Windrush brought the first large group of Caribbean immigrants to Britain.

Research is ongoing and new information emerges continuously.

This display is part of Autograph ABP’s The Missing Chapter, an ongoing archive research programme supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Autograph ABP is a London-based arts charity that works internationally in photography and film, race, representation, cultural identity and human rights.
